Building Offgrid- the fragile dream

December 16, 2018

I would love to be able to tell you that building in a remote area way outside of town is an easy prospect, but it will be the challenge of your lifetime. Even if you have built homes before you will face a whole new level of challenges every step of the way. If you are realistic and patient anything is possible, but it will take some serious planning and mindset changes before you even start looking at a piece of property to buy.

Let me tell you a little bit about myself. I've been a custom home builder and General contractor for over 30 years. Back in 2008 I found myself at the abrupt end of a very fruitful career as a Master Planned community developer in Las Vegas. I built massive infrastructure projects, commercial centers and beautiful custom homes. To put it bluntly I got caught with my hand in the cookie jar as the economy collapsed and lost everything my wife and I had worked for our entire lives. The idea of retirement vaporized in  a matter of months and we retreated to our vacation home in the rural outback of Northern Arizona. What was once our little country place became our lifeboat and our only refuge in a brutal storm of loss and survival. We were thrust into making the best out of our little offgrid home.

We had a well, septic and very small solar power system so it wasn't like we were homeless. We had no idea how to make a living in our new very rural existence let alone any concept of the challenges that we would face in the years to come.

What I will tell you in this Blog is how through trial and error we became the masters of our fate and navigated through the rough waters of offgrid living. I will go through all of the various categories that need to be considered before you take the plunge into the outback. If I can do nothing else I will hopefully open your eyes to the challenges of obtaining your dream and save you some very expensive lessons in the process.

In this series I will go over in depth the following topics;

           Finding the perfect property

           Site development concerns

           Working rural

           Rural living topics

           Designing your dream

           Construction feasibility

Please join me on this journey. If you are even considering a move into the rural areas, especially Arizona, I can hopefully save you some serious time and money and help guarantee your success in your new adventure.

Proper planning prevents piss poor performance!

Wishing you good luck and may you never surrender.
